Civil wedding ceremonies in Italy – First Important Information:
– Civil ceremonies are officiated by an Italian authority and are legally recognized in Ireland
– Ceremony is performed in Italian by the Mayor or a civil registrar, with the presence of an interpreter
– Ceremony consists in a mix between the articles of the Italian civil code and traditional marriage vows
– Ceremony lasts about twenty minutes
– Two witnesses are necessary
– Civil ceremony by law must take place in buildings or places approved by the Italian government

Basic Documentation to provide:
– A full birth certificate (showing parents’ names)
– A valid passport (the first pages photocopies will be needed)
– A “Certificate de Coutume” or “Certificate of Nulla Osta” from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin
– A MP2A Form from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin

PLEASE NOTE that the Department of Foreign Affairs would require an administrative fee of approximately 30 euros to be paid.

If either person has been previously married the following documents will also be required:
– Certified copy of previous marriage certificate(s)
– Original divorce (decree absolute) or death certificate(s) of previous spouse(s)

PLEASE NOTE that Italian law states that at least 300 days must pass before a woman can remarry if she was previously divorced.

For religious ceremonies
The following documentation will be required to be arranged:
– Religious Nulla Osta from your Bishop.
– Certificate of Dispensation from your Parish Priest.
– Certificate of Baptism.
– Certificate of Confirmation.
– Certificate of Pre-Marriage Course.
– All documents as stated for the civil ceremony

**Religious documents are only valid for 6 months and must be in the parish in Italy at least 30 days before the wedding day**
